SPOILER FREE REVIEW

Sonic is back with a brand new storyline you immediately get thrown into. This issue is easy to get to grips with if you're a new fan, old, or somewhere in between (that's where I fall into FYI). Tails and Sonic set up this story, adding a nice touch of their comradery to it. If you've been put off the Sonic the Hedgehog comic series before this is the chance to join it with a fresh storyline by the talented staff handling this publtion.

'KWIK' THOUGHTS

** Quick Summary of everything below for the Sonic fan on the go **

  • We're thrown into a brand new, mysterious story about where is Eggman, and who's controlling his army. I'm interested in who.
  • There's plenty of action in this issue and some easter eggs for the more mainstream sonic fans. The dragoon makes a cameo briefly in the exposition.
  • I think the book is going to have Sonic team up with a few buds, and they'll each have a reason why they can't be in the next one. Amy Rose is next while Tails is sticking back to repair the damage.
  • Overall, definitely an easy book to get into a new Sonic story.

SUMMARY IN 3000 Words Or Less

Sonic's latest adventure takes him to a town under attack by Eggman's forces, but Eggman himself has vanished. In town, the citizens try to fight off the invading robots but are failing. Sonic arrives, quickly rolling through them and the townsfolk couldn't be happier. They're all huge fans. However,r giant robots can repel Sonic's attacks and give chase to him. Just as Sonic's about to be flattened by a hammer, Tails arrives to save his buddy. Sonic & Tails team up to destroy these Egg Hammer robots. Upon seeing the duo take out three out of four Egg Hammers, the rest of the army tries to flee. Sonic topples the Egg Hammer while Tails shuts the gate to destroy the remaining army.

Tails wisely remarks the army was too calculated compared to how they have been without Eggman (crashing into each other or falling off ledges for example). Sonic ponders if Eggman is behind it but Tails believes Eggman would have announced his return with significant fanfare, so it must be somebody else. Sonic doesn't see this as an issue, he'll just destroy badniks. Tails expresses his worry about Sonic getting hurt again if he got caught off-guard but Sonic reassures him and invites Tails along to further reassure him. Tails initially accepts before seeing the state of the town, so he decides he'd be better staying behind to rebuild the town than slow Sonic down. Sonic zooms off, unaware he's being watched by a robot that transmits to an unseen villain in a chair with Eggman's logo on the back. He commands a new battalion be deployed to the nearest town. He also wants the resistance to be aware of Sonic's victory as he wants to crush him and Amy Rose in one strike...

MY THOUGHTS

Panel: Sonic vs 4 Egghammers
(Foreshadowing?)

So if you've read my preface post about my Sonic knowledge before I jumped into this series, you'll know I'm one of those who want to get better at Sonic the Hedgehog and level up my fandom for the fastest thing alive.

But after completing this issue, I immediately drew a little parallel at two things in this issue. Amy Rose teased at the end seems like it had been slightly foreshadowed through the Egghammer badniks. Hammers being Amy Rose's signature weapon of choice. There's also this pinkish cat/fox that gets saved by Sonic below, who appears infatuated by the blue blur and rings some bells.

Speaking of the characters in this issue. There are a few townsfolk doing their best to fend off the badniks. My favorite would have to be the one who takes a full-on punch from a robot, steel to cheek and sets the tone of what these townsfolk can do. I felt they needed Sonic's help and he shows up right and ready to save the day.

Some Townfolk
(Another Hammer and Pink character in love with Sonic.
I said foreshadowing right?)

Once the hero shows up, he smashes through a lot of these badniks but the Egghammers pose a threat to Sonic in this issue #1. I enjoyed  Sonic is saved by Tails and showed us that it will not just be Sonic squashing robots for pages.

Panel: Tag Team for the Win
(Heroes don't look back at explosions)

In fact Sonic and Tails having to team up to defeat this robot gives a tone that he's going to need his twin-tailed buddy going forward. It can be very easy to relegate Tails but the writing strongly includes him in the turning point of this issue. Sonic even takes a moment to applaud Mile, giving me a good chuckle.

Panel: Sonic recognizes game
(Game recognizes game)

Overall I'm going to rate this comic out of 5 stars, 1 star for each criteria:

Action + Pacing + Villains + Storyline + Awesomeness

I believe the issue came in strong after the cancellation of the Archie series. It welcomes new fans to this Sonic the Hedgehog IDW series with open arms, pats them on the back and points them in the direction of what they've got cooking. Very intrigued to find our what happens next.

Please find below my favourite panel, a Robmaniac score I gave for this comic by picking out all the bits I liked.and is that an Ian Flynn factoid below?

MY FAVOURITE PANEL

Something I want to do for this series going forward is what my favourite panel is and why. It's at the end if you wanna keep checking it out.

My Favourite Panel: Unamused Tails

Tails here is just about to close the gate on a retreat plan. I just like how in control of everything Tails is, how confident this yellow fox is that no badnik is getting away that he pulls this expression when Sonic tells him to hurry up. Oh ye of little faith indeed.

ROBMANIAC SCORE

+ 1 - Intriguing Storyline Introduced
+ 1 - Mystery element added to the story
+ 1 - Tails and Sonic's teamwork together
